State Transport Authority (STA), West Bengal



In order to manage the vast field and activities of the road transport sector, the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 has made several provisions under chapter V- Control of Transport Vehicles. As per Section 68 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, the State Transport Authority, West Bengal has been constructed to exercise and discharge its powers and functions as per the provisions laid down in the Act, Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 and West Bengal Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 and to give effect to any directions issued by the State Government under section 67 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988.


The STA WB looks after the Inter- Regional and Inter State Stage Carriage Permits, Contract Carriage Permits (All Bengal Luxury Taxi Permits etc.), Temporary and Special permits. Interstate Stage Carriage Permits are issued on the basis of Reciprocal Transport Agreements with the neighboring states of Orissa, Assam, Bihar, Sikkim and Jharkhand. This authority also looks after the matters related to the plying of buses between Kolkata and Dhaka under agreement between the Governments of India and Bangladesh. BBIN Motor Vehicles Agreement is the latest introduction in this segment.


Presently STA has one sub office at Silliguri which is operational. Another Sub-Office has been opened by order at Durgapur which is yet to be operational.
